From its opening in 1884 until nearly 90 years later Hill Top School led a precarious existence. It was closed on several occasions and spent two periods as a half-time school with Balmoral. Both little communities owed their origins to the Great Southern Railway. Railway employees were the mainstays of both schools until the new line from Picton to Mittagong was opened in 1919, leaving the old line little used. Balmoral School did not survive for very long afterwards but Hill Top continued, despite periodic threats of closure.

It has only been in the last 23 years that the character of the school has altered considerably. The school has grown from a two teacher school in the mid 1970’s to ten classes currently. The increasing number of enrolments reflects the changing nature of the community with new houses being built and families moving out of the Sydney area looking for a quieter, more peaceful environment in a bushland setting.
